The Joy of Pasalubong

Hi! I am Kathleen. I am from the Philippines and I am now living in this lovely town of Auburn, Alabama. When I was young, my mom would sometimes bring a “pasalubong” to us. A pasalubong is the Filipino word for a special treat or homecoming gift from someone who has been away from home. The joy of receiving a pasalubong is not just about the gift itself, but the thoughtfulness and love it represents. It's a way to show that someone was thinking of you even when they were far away.

A Tradition of Generosity

For Filipinos, pasalubong is more than just a gift; it's a cherished tradition that embodies the joy of giving. It's common for Filipinos to offer food to guests, ensuring they leave with something to bring home. This practice is a reflection of the inherent generosity and hospitality that is deeply rooted in Filipino culture. Whether it's a box of local delicacies, handmade crafts, or a simple token, the act of giving pasalubong is a way to show your love and share happiness.

Sharing the Love of Food

I have been wanting to share the flavorful food I grew up eating. One of the foods that I wanted to share are the homemade breads that I love. I remember waking up to the irresistible aroma of freshly baked pandesal, a staple in Filipino households. It was a morning ritual, a simple pleasure that brought the family together around the breakfast table. These breads, often included in pasalubong, are not just about satisfying hunger; they're about sharing a piece of one's culture and heritage. Every bite carries with it the warmth of family and the comfort of home.

Bringing a Taste of Home to Alabama

Living in Auburn, I realized how much I missed these comforting flavors. As a result I decided to start baking my favorite breads to share with my family, friends and neighbors here. The response has been heartwarming—people are curious and eager to learn about these delicious treats from the Philippines. It makes me happy to see how food can bridge cultural gaps, creating connections and sparking conversations.

Culinary Adventures

I've also experimented with incorporating products from local businesses here into traditional Filipino recipes. This fusion has been a delightful journey, blending the familiar with the new, and creating something entirely unique. Sharing these creations has become my way of bringing a piece of the Philippines to my new home, and it's a joy to see others enjoy them as much as I do.

A Celebration of Culture

I've found a community that appreciates diversity and embraces new experiences. Sharing pasalubong and Filipino cuisine has been a wonderful way to celebrate my culture and meet new friends. It's a reminder that no matter where we are in the world, food has the power to bring us together, fostering understanding and kindness in every bite.
